Starting a cleaning business is exciting — but finding those first customers can often feel like the toughest challenge. The great news? You don't need a huge marketing budget or years of experience to secure your first 10 clients. What you do need is a smart, focused strategy that puts your name in front of the right people and makes booking your cleaning services simple and hassle-free.
This guide shares practical, proven steps to help you land your initial cleaning clients, with tips tailored especially for service businesses. Whether you're launching a house-cleaning service, commercial cleaning, or Airbnb turnovers, these effective strategies will help your client base grow quickly and confidently.
Start With a Professional Presence
Create a simple, trustworthy online footprint
Your first clients want one thing above all else: trust. They need to feel comfortable letting you into their home or workplace. A clean, professional online presence builds that confidence — even if you're just starting out.
Set up a Google Business Profile so you appear when locals search "cleaner near me" or "house cleaning (your suburb)". Add photos, list your services, include your business hours, and write a clear description that highlights why you're dependable and reliable.
Create a basic website or landing page. With tools like Taskly's website builder for service businesses, you can quickly assemble a professional site. Make sure to feature your services, starting prices or estimates, and a clear "Book Now" button to encourage inquiries.
Set up a Facebook page with a few posts, photos, and an easy way for potential clients to message you directly.
No need to build the fanciest website in town — just a reliable spot where people can find, trust, and connect with you.
Friends, neighbours, and local connections pack a punch
When starting out, your first clients often come through people who already know someone who knows you. Don't underestimate the power of your existing network.
Tell friends and whānau that your cleaning business is now up and running.
Offer a limited "founding client" discount to your first 10 customers to make them feel special.
Join local Facebook groups (such as community pages, "Auckland Mums," or "Brisbane Community Noticeboard") and post a friendly, straightforward introduction.
Drop flyers in a close local radius — apartments, terraced homes, and townhouse complexes are prime spots.
A simple message like "Launching my new cleaning service and taking on my first 10 homes — happy to offer a first-clean discount!" can work wonders for attracting attention.
Leverage Digital Lead Sources That Actually Work
Focus on where people are already searching for cleaners
Most cleaning clients begin their search online — whether via Google, social media, or local service groups. A few well-placed posts can bring your first clients right to your doorstep.
Facebook Marketplace: An often underrated source of leads. Post offers like "Weekly home cleaning now available in (your suburb) – discounted first clean."
Local Facebook groups: Share engaging before-and-after photos, special promotions, or helpful tips like "3 ways to keep your home fresh between deep cleans."
Google Ads (optional): Even a modest $10–$20 daily budget can attract high-intent local leads actively searching for cleaning services.
Keep your ads and posts clear, honest, and focused on how you relieve clients' stress by making their lives easier.
Partner With Local Businesses
One good partnership can bring five clients at once
Local businesses that regularly deal with tenants, guests, or homeowners often need reliable cleaning services — or know people who do. Building these relationships can fill your schedule quickly.
Consider reaching out to:
Property managers who require end-of-tenancy or routine cleans
Airbnb hosts needing reliable turnover cleaning
Real estate agents looking for pre-photography cleans to showcase properties
Local tradespeople who leave behind dusty or messy work sites
A simple, friendly message like "Hi, I'd love to offer a trial clean to see if we can support your clients/homeowners/guests" often works better than a hard sell. One good partnership can turn into steady, regular work.
Use Intro Offers (But Keep Them Smart)
Bring new customers through the door without harming your margins
Discounts and specials can help you stand out, but avoid slashing prices so low that you're working for peanuts. Instead, offer smaller value-adds or incentives for first cleans, such as:
10% off the first clean
A free add-on service such as oven cleaning or interior windows
Discounts for weekly or fortnightly ongoing bookings
These little perks grab attention while protecting your revenue.
Respond Fast — and Make Booking Easy
Speed is your secret weapon
When someone reaches out for cleaning, they typically want the job done quickly — and might be contacting several cleaners at once. Fast, friendly replies can make all the difference.
Best practices include:
Responding within 5 minutes whenever possible
Sending clear, friendly quotes
Offering available time slots immediately
Following up within 24 hours if the client goes quiet
This is where automation shines. Using job management software like Taskly's booking tools lets customers book online instantly — fast, simple, and hassle-free for everyone.
Before-and-after photos do wonders for selling your cleaning service
Photos and short videos help you stand out and build trust. They showcase your skills and give potential clients the confidence to book.
Share content like:
Before-and-after shots of kitchens, bathrooms, ovens, or carpets
Short, satisfying cleaning videos
Testimonials from your early clients
A behind-the-scenes look at your cleaning process and tools
People love to see real, visible results — especially when it comes to cleaning.
Offer Reliable, High-Quality Service That Wins Referrals
Your first 10 clients can lead to your next 50
Once you've landed those first clients, treat each one like gold. Clean thoroughly, arrive on time, communicate clearly, and be friendly. Every positive experience boosts your chances of referrals.
Even better? Ask for reviews. Google reviews are crucial trust signals and help you rank higher in local search results.
A simple line after a job — "If you were happy with today's clean, a quick Google review would mean a lot" — can go a long way.
Use the Right Tools to Stay Organised
Stay on top of quotes, scheduling, clients, and payments
As your cleaning business grows, admin can become a headache. Missed messages, double bookings, and slow quotes are common reasons small cleaning businesses lose clients.
